Oh we are SO ready for this. What kind of community gives awards in public to artists then sends them home to a minimum wage job outside of the industry and says “that’s just how it is.” Not this community. Not anymore.
i saw an artist post a video today like “returning to your 9-5 after winning an ECMA”… it was supposed to be funny but this is someone who has been working for years. imagine if there was money, or opportunity, tied to awards, instead of just the pewter treble clef.
That post says so much. For most of my time in the industry I never dared to dream of it being different. Now it doesn’t feel like we have a choice. This is not sustainable as it stands.
I knew when I met you that you were going to bring us something good and actually help some change, I’ve been waiting to see what you would create and am excited to see and be part of what happens with the Breakwater

PS- sometimes it’s easier to do the best and most impactful work from the outside. Perhaps this IS the first best time for this work!
Thank you so much for your encouragement. And I think you are onto something - if I learned anything last year it was that institutions have a brain, an existing identity, that can't be reimagined and reinvented overnight. As hard as it is to grow a brand new brain, it is a fresh start.
